On Jan. 23, the Phoenix City Council will vote on a proposed $220 million renovation project on Talking Stick Resort Arena in downtown Phoenix.
The controversial vote was postponed after the backlash that followed news of a pending deal negotiated between the city and the Suns over the past two years. It calls for the team to pay $80 million and the city $150 million to renovate the arena, which opened in 1992.
The Suns also would pay the total cost, estimated to be north of $25 million, for a new practice facility that would be located in Phoenix. Their current practice space would be lost in the planned renovation.
The city’s $150 million share would be paid out of a Sports Facility Fund that was created in 1989 to build the arena and provide for future improvements or renovations as well as to promote tourism in downtown Phoenix.
